The Deli Philly's Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Toy Cannons

- by Alexis V.

Like many artists, what began as a side project for The Gerunds’ Ben Goldberg has evolved into its own being in the form of Toy Cannons. The local area five-piece dives into crates to bring back beloved oldies melodies with 80’s synths and pop-punk sensibilities to mix up concoctions that beg for crowd sing-alongs. You can check out our interview with our Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner’s leader of the pack below.

The Deli: How did you start making music?
Ben Goldberg: Toy Cannons started off as a side project of mine. It was just a recording project at first, but everyone involved liked the way things were going so we decided to make it a band.

TD: Where did the name Toy Cannons come from?
BG: Our name comes from the title of song on the Tom Cameron album Music To Wash Dishes By called "Toy Cannon." I guess I just like the way it sounds.

TD: What are your biggest musical influences?
BG: My main influence has always been Joey Ramone, but currently my writing is influenced by oldies music like Del Shannon, 80's French Synth Pop bands like Moderne and my pop-punk background.

TD: What artists (local, national and/or international) are you currently listening to?
BG: My band of the moment is The Drums. I love those guys.

TD: What's the first concert that you ever attended and first album that you ever bought?
BG: My first concert was Overkill and Biohazard at The Trocadero in Philadelphia, and the first album I ever bought was the Beverly Hills Cop II soundtrack (these two events were light years apart).

TD: What do you love about Philly?
BG: The food.

TD: What do you hate about Philly?
BG: Parking.
TD: What are your plans for the rest of 2012?
BG: Promoting our debut album, writing new material and working on our live act.

TD: What was your most memorable live show?
BG: For me, the most memorable show so far was playing Don Pedro in Brooklyn. That place had a great vibe and we just had a great time all around so we're looking forward to heading back there soon.

TD: What's your favorite thing to get at the deli?
BG: Turkey on toasted rye, Russian dressing on the side.
