The Deli Philly's Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Pretty Words

By: Alexis V.

September 09, 2016

Rising from the ashes of “a thrash metal band that never did anything,” Josh Crackett (guitar, vocals, synth) and Paul Bothwell (guitar) didn’t seem to have much trouble getting drummer Dom Russo and bassist Justin Kohn on board to form Pretty Words, based on the strength of their recorded demos. We also liked what we heard and so did you. That is why Pretty Words was chosen as our recent Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner. You can check out what Crackett and the boys have been getting into and where they’ve been in our “get to know ya” interview below. (Photo by Jordy Lyric)

The Deli: How did you start making music?

Josh Crackett: Paul and I were in a thrash metal band that never did anything so we got bored of not doing anything. Made some tunes we were both into, recorded demos, and then Dom was like "yea," and then later we needed a bass player, and Justin was also like "yea."

TD: Where did the band name Pretty Words come from?

JC: Pretty words are pretty words are pretty words...and it's an Elvis Costello song.

TD: What are your biggest musical influences?

Dom Russo: Travis Barker & Scott Raynor.

Paul Bothwell: Wire

Justin Kohn: Jazz - I guess - idk.

JC: The modern lovers, Jonathan Richman knows some shit...and Biff Rose - “Fill Your Heart” with Biff Rose are two albums that move this thing along here.

TD: What artists (local, national and/or international) are you currently listening to?

DR: Green Day - American Idiot.

PB: Jonas Brothers with Hannah Montana – Dookie.

JK: Cheap Trick - RUSH.

JC: RUSH - And Then There Was X by DMX, but my mom wouldn't let me listen.

TD: What do you love about Philly?

JC: There's stuff to do, and there's a lot of cats.

TD: What do you hate about Philly?

JC: It's really easy to find dead cats around.

TD: What are your plans for 2016?

JC: Shred. Nonstop. All year long.

TD: What was your most memorable live show?

DR: Ruben sandwich.
