Bad Side

Get Blindsided by Bad Side at Wolf Cycles Aug. 28

Get to Wolf Cycles early tonight because the show will be on a tight schedule with a hard 10pm curfew, and you don’t want to miss it. If you’re not ready, local hardcore punks Bad Side will have a blindsiding effect, packing a concentrated high-octane punch that unrelentingly attacks from all angles. Releasing a fresh quick-hitting single yesterday simply and directly titled “Cassingle” for their upcoming September tour, Bad Side rushes the gates with ill intentions. Tonight, they'll be joined by primal New Brunswick punks Razordheads and the blistering onslaught of Ontario, Canada’s Born Wrong. Wolf Cycles, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7pm, $7, All Ages - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, July 18 - 20

After being victims of a hit and run this past Sunday, Nothing was forced to rent a van to finish out the rest of their tour, which obviously is an expense that few smaller-scale bands can afford, so any merch purchases or donations (PayPal at Nickymoney@gmail.com) would be greatly appreciated when they stop home this Saturday at the First Unitarian Church. The hard-rockin’/livin’ shoegaze outfit will be co-headlining the bill with badass California progressive hardcore crew, Matador Records’ Ceremony. They’ll also be joined by locals Bad Side, Iron Lung, and Anxiety Hammer so be prepared to get sweaty and feel bodies smashing against you in the steamy basement of The Church. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7pm, $14, All Ages - Alexis V.

Bad Side Opening for NOBUNNY at Underground Arts Feb. 7

Sometimes bands ease their way in gradually building in energy before reaching a high point, Bad Side is not one of those bands. Rather than climbing the stairs and celebrating at the top, the group unloads a full-scale attack with an immediate hardcore edge. A jarring stampede approach characterizes the instrumentation that embraces controlled outbursts. While the momentum driven avalanche of sound has raw moments, the drums and bass smashing their way through, creating an open space for the vocals and guitar to do work, the group harnesses its collective ferocity finding a path to follow. Local rockers The Whips will be unveiling their new guitarist Kyle Seely. With grimy guitar riffs, a psychedelic twist and a forward thrust, Wisconsin duo The Hussy fills out a bill that will open for the always unpredictable NOBUNNY at Underground Arts tonight. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $12, 21+ - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, September 6 - 8

Wanna do something BAD this weekend? Well, you can join me tonight upstairs at Wolf Cycle for “The Bad Gig” presented by Badmaster Records. Two of our favorite badass fledgling local hardcore outfits Bad Side and Bad Energy will be celebrating the release of their split 7” that will be available from the much-beloved West Philly label. It will be an extra special rager for Bad Side because they’ll also have another new 7” on hand entitled Everybody Wants Something From Me, which you can grab at Nervous Habit Records, and it will be the kickoff to their “Break Out Tour.” Rounding out the bill will be post-punk trio The Bad Doctors. “Come out and do some bad kid shit.” Wolf Cycle, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7pm, $5, All Ages - Alexis V.

Bad Side Opening for JEFF the Brotherhood & Hunters at KFN May 17

When the demos from Bad Side first surfaced, I began to get very excited because they gave me similar feelings to when I first discovered local powerhouses Leather and Sickoids. It was a sense of pride that Philly had another punk outfit that people should definitely take notice of. It is also certainly nice to see that others are feeling the same way with Bad Side being booked in the highly-coveted opening slot for JEFF the Brotherhood and Hunters’ final evening of their two-night run at Kung Fu Necktie. There will be blood. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $15, 21+ - Alexis V.
