New Track: "Fuselage" - Banned Books

Philly experimental noise-pop trio Banned Books has a new self-titled release coming out on February 23 via Ramp Local. The album was recorded in four days at Gravesend Studios with Ava Luna's Carlos Hernandez and Julian Fader. Here's a taste of it with their latest badass single "Fuselage."

Brought to you by End Result Productions & WKDU in conjunction with R5 Productions and the First Unitarian Church is Blistering Ephemera II. The all-day music showcase this Saturday features national touring acts like Xiu Xiu (who will be playing Philly for the first time in four years), Providence, RI political sax punks Downtown Boys, and PC Worship. You’ll also find a slew of local acts earlier in the day. Slow Animal is certainly playing way earlier than I’d like. I also saw what I’m hoping to be a bad joke – “Maybe our last show ever???????” – on their FB page and their lack of shows lately makes me wonder so you’ve been warned. Build on the Positivity w/Impressionist at JB's Dec. 15

These unseasonably warm temperatures have spawned a fresh optimism. Tonight, the multi-faceted Kyle Press-led ensemble, otherwise known as Impressionist, aims to build on that positive spin. Loose, dashing forward in a freeing manner, their tunes are enhanced through the fine attention to detail afforded by a large toolbox of instrumentation. Impressionist can paint with musical dimension; breezy and smooth can quickly transition to turbulent an ominous as keys, horns sax stir the sonic air. Through it all, an engaging, shape-shifting, organic puzzle keeps you consistently on alert. A pair of Atlanta-based bands, including Red Sea, whose laid-back grooving pop is spiked with hyperactive flurries, and the fascinating, classically-framed, modern-spun, vast landscapes of Faun and a Pan Flute, are sandwiched between the ongoing, experimental, noise-infused exploits of avant-pop trio Banned Books, who completes a billing that is comforting while pushing the traditional limits. Banned Books Opening for Ava Luna & Cloud Becomes Your Hand at The Pharmacy April 28

South Philly's The Pharmacy has been steadily building its reputation in the DIY community, and you are starting to find acts on its bills that would normally be performing in venues further North in town. This evening, art-pop outfit Banned Books will be hosting Deli NYC favorites Ava Luna, Cloud Becomes Your Hand, and Columbia, South Carolina's ET Anderson. The trio of Matthew Dermond, Zane Kanevsky, and April Heliotis are wrapping up work on their first album together. Tonight's showcase will be a good opportunity for them to test out the new material before hitting the road next month with the band Palm. The Pharmacy, 1300 S. 18th St., 8pm, $7, All Ages - H.M.
