Birds of Maya

Happy 10th Anniversary Week, Johnny Brenda’s!!!

For those who’ve been lucky enough to live through the renaissance that Philly’s music scene has been experiencing for the last decade or so, we’d like to remind you of a time when the next big thing in music was not likely going to be discovered in your favorite local DIY space. With the exception of R5 Productions, who was only consistently booking the First Unitarian Church at the time and just starting to gain a great reputation nationally in the indie music scene, many of the music venues were known more for ripping off artists than helping to nurture the music community. However, once Johnny Brenda’s renovated its second floor into a concert space, it was a total game changer - forever raising the bar in Philly. (Thank you!) We finally had a world-class music venue that actually cared about the artists’ and concertgoers’ experience. (What local musician out there didn’t appreciate the complimentary Greek plate in the backstage when he or she first performed there?) Johnny Brenda’s became a cornerstone for the arts & culture community in Fishtown and throughout Philadelphia.
This week marks the beloved establishment’s 10th Anniversary as a music venue, and they’ll be celebrating it with some kick-ass events that start this evening with the soulful, powerful ache of Hop Along frontwoman Frances Quinlan, the polished indie-pop of Hurry, and the “heavenly blues” of The Goodbye Party. You also surely don’t want to miss Tuesday night’s psych explorations with Bardo Pond, Birds of Maya, and Chris Forsyth. The rest of the week’s festivities will also include evenings with Rocky Votolato, The Album Leaf, IGNITE Philly, and much more. Cheers to all the good folks at JB’s! - Q.D. Tran

The Writhing Squares Record Release Show at KFN Aug. 11

Kevin Nickles (Ecstatic Vision, Taiwan Housing Project) and Daniel Provenzano (Purling Hiss, Spacin') rocket through space as The Writhing Squares. Tonight, the duo celebrates their latest album In The Void Above (Siltbreeze) with a performance at Kung Fu Necktie. The hard-driving record circles as components of chaotic noise emanate amid the locked-down bass and percussion, while the vocal interjections serve as captain-esque reference points. Splashed with the additional sonic colors of flute and saxophone, this noise-rock meets jazz ambiance steers toward the unexplored in a twisted futuristic groove. This evening’s festivities will also feature the local psych-punk of Igneous Eyes and the commanding psych-rock power of Birds of Maya. The genre-elusive, jazz-rock freak-out that is Massachusetts’s The Blues Dream Box completes this adventurous night of music. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Birds of Maya Sighting at KFN May 17

It's about that time when the stars align, and we are treated to another Birds of Maya sighting. The PSYCH-ROCK power trio appears at a handful of shows a year, but hopeful these jam sessions will come more frequently once they release their upcoming album. Yup - a new Birds of Maya record does exist! They're co-headlining Kung Fu Necktie tonight with the Bay Area's CCR Headcleaner. You know what you need to do. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Weekend Warrior, August 8 - 10

It’s going to be beautiful weather for a picnic this weekend so luckily, Kensington Picnic II is back with a stellar lineup all-day Saturday at the Liberty Vintage Motorcycles yard. One of my favorite bands, Spacin’, is slated for an earlier set in the day so make sure not to miss them, because you never know when you’ll get a chance again. The band recently finished recording their new album, which (I was told) will be released via Richie Records. Some more rad psych rock news, Birds of Maya, who are performing later in the day, will also be returning with a new album that they recorded in the woods of New York. So excited to hear some new tunes from both crews! Filling out the jam-packed bill of local area talent will be Strapping Fieldhands, Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler, Fursaxa, Laura Baird, Randall of Nazareth (Randy Huth of Pearls & Brass), and Hohlraum (Joe Winters of Pearls & Brass and Sean McGuiness of Pissed Jeans). Yup, it’s definitely where you want to be this weekend! Liberty Vintage Motorcycles Yard, Frankford Ave. (between Susquehanna & Dauphin), 12pm-8pm, Free, All Ages - Q.D. Tran
