Cheap Dinosaurs

Cheap Dinosaurs Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle Oct. 18

Today, the psych/prog crew of Cheap Dinosaurs unveiled their new album, High Strangeness, and tonight, the quartet creeps into South Philly's Boot & Saddle. The band latest release navigates through a fantastical deep-forest, video-game resonating labyrinth. The pulsating beats ascribed to the combination of heavy yet precise backend-led trails and mysterious synths drive the quest toward its ultimate destination. The optimistic comfort of familiar terrain is temporarily shaken as ominous quaking tones enclose, while one proceeds deeper into the dimly lit terrain. They’ll bridge the gap between the pronounced, punk stomping of Tiny Vices and the intricately explosive, primal, post-hardcore surges of Georgia’s Cinemechanica, whom released a new self-titled album late last month. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $10, 21+ - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, October 30 - November 1

Without a doubt, Halloween is our favorite holiday. And we know that you can’t wait to get into a little mischief this weekend. Where would we suggest for you to do that at? It’s tough to say with so many options. You can kick it old school tonight with legendary Philly punks The Dead Milkmen at The Troc and psych rockers Bardo Pond at JB’s, or go way back to the 8-bit sounds of your childhood with Cheap Dinosaurs and Chipocrite at MilkBoy Philly. There is a plethora of cover band bills to choose from so take your pick. Do you want to rock out with your genitals out (so PC, right?) with Ween (featuring members of On The Water, Post Sun Times & Sandcastle) at South Philly DIY (garage) space Cha-Cha’Razzi? Or is watching Vita and the Woolf’s Jen Pague throwing down with her best Sasha Fierce impersonation at MilkBoy Philly your bag? And of course, our old pal TJ Kong will be playing host to his 6th annual Halloween Murder Show at Underground Arts. There’s a lot to consume in costume this weekend; however, we conveniently list the local activities for you below. - The Deli Staff

Clark Park Summer Solstice Festival

The Clark Park Summer Solstice Festival returns again this afternoon. For over 40 years, the West Philly community has been putting on special events at the beloved neighborhood meeting place. Today, you'll find an eclectic mix of music, dance and theater performances, arts and craft vendors, and children's activities. Headlining the fest will be Cheap Dinosaurs, Philly's premier chiptune outfit, led by Dino Lionetti. You'll also find garage-pop crew Frontyards, folk-pop singer-songwriter Liz de Lise, powerpopsters Sidewalk Atlas, and many others. Hopefully the festival gods will keep the rain away, but it's not looking promising so don't forget to bring your gear. Clark Park Bowl, 43rd St. & Chester Ave, 12pm, Free, All Ages - H.M. Kauffman

Where Is My Mind?: Cheap Dinosaurs' Dino Lionetti & Paul Weinstein

Since forming Cheap Dinosaurs following the demise of his previous band Chromelodeon, Dino Lionetti and his bandmates have been broadening the chiptune horizons with epic, spacey, transformative jams. They are able to create expansive soundscapes despite challenging themselves by using potentially restrictive tools like a Game Boy. We sat down with Dino Lionetti and Chipocrite, a.k.a. Paul Weinstein, who is performing at North Star Bar this Saturday at 8static and plays bass in Cheap Dinosaurs, to talk game soundtracking, backing tracks, why chiptune is the punk of the electronic genre, and much more HERE.
