Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel

New Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band Live EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band recently dropped a live EP, entitled Rare Dreams: Solar Live 2.27.18, capturing a three-song sampling of their performance at London’s Café Oto. Bookended by Peter Kerlin & Jason Robira (both of Sunwatchers), Forsyth launches into a cosmic sojourn. The amped-up trio sound connected and ready to push sonic boundaries at rocket speed. Wedged in between a couple of originals ("Dreaming In The Non-Dream" & "The First 10 Minutes of Cocksucker Blues"), Forsyth also lyrically adapts and personally contextualizes a cover of Neil Young’s “Don’t Be Denied,” off 1973's Time Fades Away. You can catch Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band tear things up this Saturday, May 12 at PhilaMOCA, supported by Sunwatchers.

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Opening for Heron Oblivion at Boot & Saddle May 27

The soothing, entrapping vocals of former Philly native Meg Baird linger, pulling you through the beautiful haze of San Francisco psych-folk outfit Heron Oblivion. The surrounding instrumentation gently stirs as the vocals waft. Then, the shapes begin to shift, and the heaviness emerges as the musical demons are let out of their confines, unleashing the fury. Tonight, Boot & Saddle hosts a sold-out show, which also features the deep entrenching psych-rock explorations of Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band. Forsyth and company bob and weave through a labyrinth of long-distance riffs and grooves, sending you into a vortex that you’ll happily survey. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $12 (Sold Out), 21+ - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, March 25 - 27

As promised, renowned Philly guitarist and composer Chris Forsyth is getting his Solar Motel Band together this Saturday night for a full-band performance of material from their new album The Rarity Of Experience, which came out early this month via No Quarter Records. The album is a rich continuation of the band’s now signature instrumental art-rock style that taps into the sound of New York’s 70’s CBGB scene, where proto-punk influences met 60’s psychedelia. The songs reach for the panoramic immensity of the “Marquee Moon”-style - epic in composition, concept, and scope. Though they are all instrumentals, the songs aren’t just extended jams; each song’s structure seems carefully calculated and punctuated with dynamic transitions and variations on themes that become increasingly familiar. Warming up the stage for Forsyth and the Solar Motel Band is 75 Dollar Bill, a band with a similar knack for the eternal composition. In contrast to Forsyth’s decidedly cosmic scope, 75 Dollar Bill’s style keeps it terrestrial and patently minimalist. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8:30pm, $10-$12, All Ages - Bryce Woodcock

Weekend Warrior, October 2 - 4

As the weather may start to settle down outside this Sunday, there will be a storm a brewing inside at Ortlieb’s. The mighty Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel are kicking off their October residency with special guests Bardo Pond. The local drone-psych legends always captivate and entrance while building their wall of sound on stage. It can be endearing while at the same time tumultuous, as vocals and instrumentation dance and clash, finding their way into our subconscious. They’ll also be joined by experimental guitarist/composer Loren Connors. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. 3rd St., $10, 8pm, 21+ - Alexis V.
