The City & I

New Track: "A.D.D." - The City & I

A new song from Colins "Bear" Regisford's The City & I has emerged. "A.D.D." captures a raw, funky, fuzz-punk tone. There’s a genre-melding, guitar-ripping openness to the track. It's in your face and heavy yet exudes an intimate vulnerability. Hopefully this is a precursor to a new album, a long-awaited follow-up to his debut Downer. (Photo by CJ Harvey)

Boy Lawyer EP Release Show at KFN June 2

The trio of Boy Lawyer celebrates the release of their new EP Decades Don't Matter tonight, as a part of a locally linked lineup at Kung Fu Necktie. Compromised of Enrique Gasparini, Steve Fitzpatrick, and Pat Higgins (all of whom have previous ties to the now defunct Dead Tenors), the new project expands upon instrumentally thematic threads, inviting a fresh open-air sound, with crisp, stretching lines, and the boost of backing vocal harmony feeling near with an eye on the far. This evening, they’ll be joined by the genre-boundless gravitational pull of Colins “Bear’” Regisford, a.k.a. The City & I, while the energetic emotive bursts of Spill and the exposed fragile punk rush of Mumblr, whose new record The Never Ending Get Down is due out June 10 via Fleeting Youth Records, cement this show into place. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $6, 21+ - Michael Colavita

New Sun Organ / The City & I Split Available for Streaming and Purchase

Ranch has released a split cassette featuring Sun Organ and The City & I. Each band serves up an original and a cover of sorts. The emotive punk of Sun Organ deliver their spin on Sparklehorse’s “King of Nails”, while The City & I bring the welding of funk & r&b on  “What You Won’t Do For Drug” a twist on Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love”. Give it a spin and catch The City & I on a billing for Boy Lawyer, Spill, and Mumblr on June 2 at Kung Fu Necktie.

Mumblr Van Fundraiser Show at Lavender Town March 5

In preparation for a summer of touring, Mumblr is headlining a show this evening at Lavender Town to raise funds for a new van. The band reels you in tight with their fragile table-setting revelations serving as potential energy that is converted into an fuzzed-out, raucous-stomping outpouring. The earnestly melodic sound of Clique does just that, offering snippets of personal/relatable songs that move with a sense of ease while lingering. Fresh off releasing their debut EP Mercy and before heading out on tour, the unadulterated, cathartic, harmonious yet lyrically haunting vibes of Fake Boyfriend persist, while the soothing eclectic haze of The City & I completes the billing. Lavender Town (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $7 Donation, All Ages - Michael Colavita

Q.D. Tran’s 50 Favorite Philly EPs/LPs of 2015

I guess what was spawned from pure procrastination has turned into an annual tradition here at The Deli Philly. We are now at our final post of 2015, and here’s my list of 50 favorite Philly EPs/LPs from this year. Do what you want with it. Hopefully you'll take a listen for yourself. So many good albums this year, I feel bad about cutting it off at 50; otherwise, I would never post this. And without further ado…

1. Nightclub (Self-released) - Blood Sound

Blood Sound crept into my subconscious in 2015. So much so that I contemplated starting my own record label to release their material. But then, I watched the Stones Throw and Creation Records documentaries, and decided maybe I should direct my energies elsewhere. Well, I’m glad that Manimal Vinyl (Bat for Lashes, Warpaint) was smart enough to snatch Blood Sound up for their next single releases. Nightclub is just the beginning of the 80's dance party that they are about to unleash on the rest of the world. To quote my buddy, Alex, whom I am absolutely jealous of for coming up with this description first: “It sounds like Ian Curtis fronting New Order.”

2. Downer (Infinity Cat) - The City & I

What can I say - “the weed-buttered food baby” of Colins “Bear” Reginsford (Mannequin Pussy, Kids, Ghost Gum), known as Downer, is dope. It’s such a diverse-sounding album with doses of weirdness and grit in all the right places. I thoroughly enjoyed gettin’ high to this one.

3. Pale Horses (Run For Cover) - mewithoutYou

It’s probably been almost a decade since I first heard of mewithoutYou, who was featured in a Philly alt-weekly at that time. The band continues to morph, evolve, and intrigue me after all these years. Pale Horses is thought-provoking material from a seasoned band.

4. Cemetery Highrise Slum (Collect) - Creepoid

What is a common question that circulates around Creepoid: “How are they not bigger?” I don’t know the answer to that, but I hope to stop hearing the question soon. Cemetery Highrise Slum is heavy, grungy psych rock that you need to get into.

5. The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us (Polyvinyl) – Beach Slang

There is a youthful exuberance to The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us, which is oddly made by old punks. However, it's rather cathartic. Beach Slang's rapid ascension is not at all surprising within the first listen.

You can check out the rest of my list HERE. And Happy New Year!!!
