We were an hour overdue and loudness was all we could hear. Black metal and small talk warmed the atmosphere as the trio Exray's lined the stage — well it wasn't really a stage, but the gap made it seem otherwise. The intimacy of Trust a Robot and Jon Bernson's continued beckoning tightened spaces between the crowd and them, if only for the last two songs. And the crowd only got tighter as Naytronix followed, with an efficacious live set of Mister Divine — a medley of tambourines, cowbells, Costa Rican-inspired drumming, and Nate Brenner's resonant basslines.

Headliner Deb DeMure came forth with a bust of Apollo to bless the set, wearing a pink changshan to juxtapose. Drab Majesty showered the Non Plus with piercing guitar tones redolent of '80s wave, and we stood transfixiated in darkness. Up last, Creepers thanked those who stayed for the end — it was just us, friends, and the Non Plus residents. Their hard-hitting lysergic psych filled the near-empty space and burrowed deep into our ears. Shiv Mehra's SG came untuned, but even the discordant yaws felt at home as the last of the audience nodded on to synthetic screams and cacophonous overlays of Lush — loudness was all we could hear. To be clear, the Winter Solstice is happening on December 22. But that shouldn't stop you from celebrating the darkest night of the year (in advance) with the Non Plus crowd this Sunday. The illustrious Deb DeMure, aka Drab Majesty, performs its last show with some novel Bay-area lovelies. Exray's conjure their signature grainy sci-fi sounds, followed by the experimental pop project Naytronix (of tUnE-yArDs), whose live set is rumored to reimagine songs from his latest album Mister Divine. Creepers will end the night, drawing out some drug-addled psych visions. Guest DJs Kerry McCoy and George Lesage IV of Deafheaven facilitate our journey into the dusk. - Ryan Mo

Crisis Arm is really loud. I saw them at a house show once. Everyone who didn't wear earplugs seemed to be thrown into a stupor. The ones who did had trouble getting to the door. The sound guy broke down in tears. It was beautiful.

This homegrown fuzz outfit from Riverside County has been responsible for widening fault lines and caving in cochleas since 2009. Most of the members live and raise 10 cats together in Hemet, and share a strong love for anime and video games; RPG fans might trace their name to a weapon in the legendary Square title Chrono Trigger. The band's humble beginnings eventually lead to underground acclaim with their 2014 LP Rend (via Mayfly Records): a collection of diffuse, lo-fi dreamscapes that merged sounds of My Bloody Valentine, loveliescrushing, and Spacemen 3. On stage, Crisis Arm roars with the strength of several fullstack amps, channeling their melancholic guitars through infinite muff and reverb pedals. In the past several years, Crisis Arm has played out DIY shows like the Blood Orange Infoshop (Riverside), dA Center For The Arts (Pomona), Dynamite Vinyl (Fresno), and White Oak Music and Arts (Van Nuys). 

Crisis Arm will be touring California for the next few weeks with their other half, San Francisco punk/gaze project Airs. This Sunday, they're playing a Part Time Punks show at The Echo with Creepers, a psychgaze band cofounded by members of Deafheaven, and veteran LA psych/post-punkers Dirt Dress ($8a/$10d). Creepers are a band to watch. Formed out of members of fellow Bay Area bands Deafheaven, White Cloud and Golden Drugs, the group sounds like psych rock with a progressive rock twist. Formed in 2011, the band recently released its first EP in October 2013. The recent self-titled EP contains two songs – Forked Tongues and Drug Vision. With shallow vocals and instrumentals that gravitate between blistering and subdued speeds, the first (and longest) song Forked Tongues is an epic, and is more reminiscent of psych rock. Drug Vision is an up-tempo tune, where Creepers’ prog-rock influences are more apparent. In the end, the two songs come together to create a cohesive and dynamic release. -Erin Dage

Brick & Mortar will be showcasing a night of rock and metal/punk infused sounds to bring Buffalo Tooth and Creepers new 7 inch split that will release this month.

Buffalo Tooth brings a hard rock/metal sound to the bill, with their newest song, “Shit Show”, which brings metal-influenced guitar riffs and fast paced vocals. Creepers bring a more daze-rock sound to the line up, with their song “Memory Fog” featuring heavy reverb, mumbling vocals and a large amount of instrumentation. Mondo Drag bring a heavy psych rock sound, with fuzzed out guitar riffs, delayed and reverbed vocals and a large emphasis on melodies, guitars, and abstract sounds. Their song, “Love Me (Like A Stranger)” even has some immediate Jimi Hendrix type sound. Urthdance brings a punk vibe to the line-up. Their distorted vocals are simple, yet powerful. Their song “FULLMOON” features repeating guitars and melodies with a garage rock sound.
