The Deli Philly's Year End Poll - Top Performers: Cruiser

Coming in fourth on The Deli Philly’s Best of 2013 Emerging Artists Poll is not a loss for Cruiser, in fact, nothing could diminish the amazing year the band had experienced. Their single, “Kidnap Me,” received numerous listens on Soundcloud, which helped to really propel things forward for them (also, I’m sure getting some airtime on the popular HBO TV show, Girls, didn’t hurt either). They were recently signed to The Windish Agency, and this summer, they’ll appear amongst some big-name acts during the Firefly Music Festival. Not only was last year a great step forward for the group, 2014 isn’t looking too shabby either. This windfall of success is well-deserved for Cruiser, who released a most enjoyable debut self-titled EP, in 2012, which was produced by Jeremy Park, who is also responsible for Youth Lagoon’s amazing album, The Year of Hibernation. From there, the project, which was originally a solo effort by frontman Andy States, took a step back to evolve as the formation of the band came together, without losing its signature warmth that radiates from each song, even in the cold chill of winter. Their most recent release, “Kidnap Me,” which was produced by Fancy Time Studio’s Kyle “Slick” Johnson, maintained the project’s upbeat pop styling, complemented by a vocal nonchalance that rises and falls like the waves on a beach. And although summer might seem like the most appropriate setting for Cruiser, they have the chops for any season, and 2014 will definitely be their year to prove it. Communion Night w/Caveman, Commonwealth Choir, Cruiser & More at Underground Arts Feb. 6

Are you ready to be saved? No? Neither am I, but I am very pumped to get out of my apartment tonight after all this sleet and snow. Where will I be? Communion is bringing their monthly music showcase once again to Underground Arts. The event connects rising national/international touring acts with some of your favorite locals. This evening features former Deli NYC Emerging Artist of the Year, Caveman, whose intelligent indie pop is so good for the soul. They’ll also be supported by indie-rock heartthrobs Commonwealth Choir, uber-catchy, buzzing indie-popsters Cruiser, Damn Right! (who will be accompanied by Grimace Federation’s Wes Schwartz on guitar, and we also heard that they’ve been moving away from their former jam-band sound to something in the vein of dreamy Washed Out meets Tycho), and much more. Now, let us pray. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $15, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman

Celebrate w/Cruiser at KFN Jan. 15

Indie-pop four-piece Cruiser is headlining Kung Fu Necktie tonight, and you should definitely go. No, their upcoming album Kidnap Me isn’t ready yet, but they do have a lot to celebrate this evening with their recent announcement of signing to The Windish Agency, which we reported earlier this week. What does that mean? Well, it might mean that you should take advantage of catching them in smaller venue like KFN; however, you could just wait and fight the crowd to see them at the next Firefly Music Festival. But I can assure that it won’t be as fun and intimate as tonight is going to be. Ok, I’ve done my job. It’s up to you to decide if you prefer to live with a lifetime of regret or not. Cruiser will also be joined on the bill by Dream Safari and Norfolk, VA’s Suburban Living. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman

Cruiser Signs to The Windish Agency

Congrats to Cruiser for signing to The Windish Agency, who is also home to Philly favorites like The War on Drugs and Vacationer as well as Animal Collective, Yeasayer and tUnE-yArDs just to name a very few! Well, it's not really surprising that they impressed the booking powerhouse with the strength of their pop gem "Kidnap." We're guessing that our prediction of hearing the track in movies and commercials will be coming soon. You can catch Cruiser performing live in Philly this Wednesday, January 15 at Kung Fu Necktie.
