Fake Boyfriend

Weekend Warrior, Aug. 26-28

Yasss - the weekend is upon us! While many will be jetting off to get their last bit of summer beach time, we have you true city dwellers covered. Enjoy your space with Cayetana tonight at PhilaMOCA! They’ll be wrapping up their mini-run with Toronto indie-rock quartet Weaves, who recently put out an impressive self-titled debut album. The gals will also be taking off to Australia next month (way cool!) before setting out on a massive North American fall tour with their “brothers” Pup. This evening might be your last chance to experience Cayetana at such an intimate space for a while so take advantage of it. And swing by early to catch Fake BoyfriendPhilaMOCA, 531 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages (Photo by Sammy Katz) - H.M. Kauffman

Mumblr Van Fundraiser Show at Lavender Town March 5

In preparation for a summer of touring, Mumblr is headlining a show this evening at Lavender Town to raise funds for a new van. The band reels you in tight with their fragile table-setting revelations serving as potential energy that is converted into an fuzzed-out, raucous-stomping outpouring. The earnestly melodic sound of Clique does just that, offering snippets of personal/relatable songs that move with a sense of ease while lingering. Fresh off releasing their debut EP Mercy and before heading out on tour, the unadulterated, cathartic, harmonious yet lyrically haunting vibes of Fake Boyfriend persist, while the soothing eclectic haze of The City & I completes the billing. Lavender Town (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $7 Donation, All Ages - Michael Colavita

Fake Boyfriend EP Release Show at PhilaMOCA Feb. 26

Who needs boys anyway when Fake Boyfriend can fulfill your every need? They can satisfy your desire for livid, scuzz-soaked grunge burners, your need for valuable, self-consciously contradictory emotional catharsis, and even your guilty longing for delicate, twee-sensible vocal harmonies. The band’s sound fluctuation inflates the loud-quiet dynamic of Babes In Toyland to the most radical proportion, intermittently paring down to a La Sera level dream pop before blasting into an apoplectic tantrum. Three voices converge into harmony just as readily as they deliberately push at each other through shouting intervals, creating a profound polarity between unity and discord (which we all love). Leave your real boyfriends at home to their videogames and emo-math rock revival bands, and come see Fake Boyfriend tonight at PhilaMOCA for their EP release show. Sharing the stage will be Shannen Moser performing soft, wistful music box vignettes, Secret Mountain, with the most melodically deadpan “tweemo” approach of the bill, and Lady Parts, with sweetly candid punk-lite confessionals. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7pm, $7-$10, All Ages - Bryce Woodcock

New Track: "Bumtown" - Fake Boyfriend

Ashley Tryba, Sarah Myers, and Abi Reimold make up the trio Fake Boyfriend. “Bumtown,” the first single from their debut EP Mercy, gradually gathers emotive energy as all three members contribute vocals, starting in a relatively subdued, reflective state, before erupting with unleashed intensity. Mercy is slated for release on February 26 - digitally and on cassette. Fake Boyfriend will be performing at Goldilocks Gallery tomorrow night with Kississippi, And The Kids, and Diet Cig.
