Johnny Showcase

Weekend Warrior, July 3 - 5

Tonight, Underground Arts presents a lineup that touches on traditional sensibilities with an eccentric twist and undeniable energy. West Philadelphia Orchestra ushers in that contagious Balkan blast of horns, threading together songs that draw individuals out of their shell with their dance-inspiring productions that methodically win one’s body over. The soulful funk of Johnny Showcase & The Mystic bring their tongue-in-cheek style that injects a humorous twist. Be prepared to move it, and shake it as those classic tones get a modern reawakening! Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $10, 21+ - Michael Colavita

Italian Market Festival at 9th St. May 16 & 17

It’s pretty hard not to attend the annual Italian Market Festival (now in its 100th year of existence) and indulge upon treats from spots like Termini Bros. and Paesano's, street vendors selling arts & crafts, ice-cold Peronis, and an endless amount of people dancing and having fun all down 9th Street. There will also be four stages worth of live music, and this year, Connie's Ric Rac and Gaslight Radio pulled together an eclectic music lineup of local talents. Saturday will be headlined by psych rockers Out of the Beardspace and punks FTS, and Sunday will close out with the hip-hop stylings of Ill Doots and the funky psychedelic cabaret rock of Johnny Showcase & the Mystic Ticket. You’ll also hear the sounds of Satellite Hearts, Vilebred, Lovers League and so much more filling the streets of the historic neighborhood. Now, you have another thing to do this weekend. Italian Market, 9th St. between Christian & Ellsworth Sts., 12pm, Free, All Ages - Bill McThrill

Pig Iron Theatre’s Annual Benefit Cabaret: Pignometry at The Troc Jan. 23

One of Philadelphia's most innovative theatre companys, Pig Iron Theatre, hosts its annual benefit cabaret at The Troc tonight. The theme of the cabaret is Pignometry, or the mathematics of angles and curves, and the illustrious Miss Martha Graham Cracker and a roster of sassy performers, who have connections to the company, will be testing their intellectual, musical, and acrobatic skills. There will be a special silent auction that features items like a membership to the Fairmount Park Conservancy, tickets to Longwood Gardens, and a basket of rum. Johnny Showcase and the Lefty Lucy Cabaret will tantalize with their raucous soul revival and charismatic showmanship, and Unidos de Filadelfia will bring their world beat and Latin soul. The show will also feature performances by the Bearded Ladies Cabaret, Fantasy Grandma, Briand Sanders Junk, and more. Trocadero Theatre, 1003 Arch St., 8pm, $25-$125, 18+ - Bill McThrill

Johnny Showcase Brings the Heat at WCL Jan. 7

Let Johnny Showcase warm you up tonight upstairs at World Café Live. The twisted funk-soul ensemble brings the heat with their down-to-get-down vibe. Whether it’s a thick bass/keys-driving jam that demands hip shaking with slick slices of guitar and soulful vocals or a sultry serenade that ushers in a close and personal situation, the effects are apparent. The group rides the multi-faceted groove for all its worth, turning any room into an inviting familiar environment by melting down the barriers as they musically crank up the thermostat. Tonight also features Los Angeles-based dark operatic outfit Timur and the Dime Museum. World Café Live (Upstairs), 3025 Chestnut St., 8pm, $15, All Ages - Michael Colavita

New Music Video: "Hit It From the Back" - Johnny Showcase

Johnny Showcase has a new music video for his track "Hit It From the Back." The comedic funk-soul man and his compadres use the backdrop of South Philly to help pass on their message of love/lust. You can get it from the back tonight when Johnny Showcase and the Mystic Ticket join West Philadelphia Orchestra's Balkan dance party at Underground Arts.
