Kate Faust

Kate Faust Opening for Bayonne at JB's Jan. 21

Throughout the years, vocalist Kate Faust has tantalized with her lush versatile vocals amid soulfully adventurous pop/R&B/electronic backdrops. The singer-songwriter’s latest album of covers, entitled Undercover, officially released on the first week of the year, is a symphonic, synth-pop success that has drawn up comparisons to the likes of Bjork and Regina Spektor for very good reason. Tonight at Johnny Brenda's will be Faust’s first show in support of the EP, and she'll be opening for noteworthy Austin-based minimalist composer Bayonne. The night will also feature an opening set by MuseyroomJohnny Brenda's, 1201. N Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ - Bill McThrill

Work Drugs 5th Annual Holiday Spectacle w/Kississippi & Kate Faust at JB's Dec. 12

Grab your dancing shoes, white sports coats and sunglasses: Work Drugs are back this Saturday for their 5th annual Holiday Spectacle at Johnny Brenda’s. With their glossy, tantalizing electro-funk rhythms, the group has established themselves over the years as prolific dance-pop songwriters, creating tunes that aren't just extremely groovable, but also at times, glazed with an introspective melancholy that can still maintain perfect pop sensibility. They'll be joined by the endearingly candid storytelling of Kississippi, who recently dropped their label debut We Have Know Future, We're All Doomed (Soft Speak Records), and siren-esque electro-pop singer-songwriter Kate Faust. Begin your holiday celebration early tonight! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10-$12, 21+ - Bryce Woodcock

Kate Faust EP Release Show at JB's April 21

When we first discovered Kate Faust many years ago, she was making a name for herself as one of the backup singers in folk/blues-rock outfit Toy Soldiers. After breaking off from the pack of former Temple students, Faust set out in search of her own musical voice. Armed with a keyboard and a voice that longed for the stage, she went through an awkward phase as a jazz/cabaret singer-songwriter. It wasn't until the release of her EP Crucial Companion when we really took notice of her as a solo artist, channeling her inner Kate Bush. Tonight at Johnny Brenda's, you'll find Faust journeying into the next phase of her career, and with the release of her first single, "In Bloom," from her new EP Eros, it seems that she'll be riding the wave of electro-soul/R&B. She'll be joined by like-minded, lauded local vet Res and Donn T, Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson's sister, who will also be celebrating the release of her new album Flight of the Donn T. Kate Faust Opening for Basia Bulat at The Boot & Saddle Nov. 20

After stepping out from behind her former moniker Lady, a throwback jazz/soul act, Kate Faust has transformed into a sultry electro-pop songbird on her latest EP Crucial Companion. Inspired by the songwriting of Bjork and Kate Bush (and I also hear a bit of St. Vincent), I can easily see her melting hearts with each performance. Faust will be opening this evening at The Boot & Saddle for Canadian singer-songwriter Basia Bulat, who has done her fair share of melting of hearts with her earnest, soulful vocals and poignant lyrics. These talented ladies are sure to make for an unforgettable night of music. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 9pm, $12, 21+ - Maggie Grabmeier
