Katie Ellen

Weekend Warrior - August 2 - 4

Cayetana performs for the final time (in the foreseeable future) this Saturday evening at Union Transfer. We certainly have a soft spot for the Philly trio - so much respect goes out to the ladies for deciding to pick up instruments for the first time and just go for it as a band. Their music finds a way to exhibit earnest vulnerability that gets under your skin, while simultaneously serving as an exhilarating, cathartic release.  The locked-in powerful push of rhythm unites with the expressively raw, soulful vocals, pulling one into the deftly-detailed, memorable, lyrical scenes. They’ll be joined by the glimmering, melodic, twang-infused narratives of Katie Ellen and the charming storytelling of Dave Tomaine’s Cave People. (Photo by Mary Ferrigno) – Michael Colavita

New Katie Ellen EP Available for Streaming

A few days ahead of its July 20th release via Lauren Records, Still Life, the new EP from Katie Ellen, is available for streaming. Balancing a melodic, earnest ease with an infectious energy, the songs wrap one up in a state of reflective assessment. Anika Pyle exhibits a level of focus and clarity. Within her vocals, there’s a gentle strength which adheres. Katie Ellen is set to head out on tour with Lemuria and Dusk at the end of this week.

New Track: "Lighthouse" - Katie Ellen

“Lighthouse” kicks off Still Life, the forthcoming EP from Katie Ellen. Gritty, guitar licks interlock with the warm, personal observations of Anika Pyle’s vocals, which are further accentuated by harmony, creating a semi-relaxed, eye-of-the-storm effect. Expressing optimism yet tinged with a sense of loneliness, it tears from both sides, and conveniently ramps up and rips as it reaches its conclusion. Still Life is due out on July 20 via Lauren Records, just in time to accompany the band on tour this summer with Lemuria and Dusk. (Photo by Elena de Soto)

Weekend Warrior, January 26 - 28

Katie Ellen maneuvers through the obstacles of personal narratives, developing momentous, melodic, glistening power pop. Juggling a range of emotion with a sense of balance, there’s a catchy, relatable release of energy. Whether sitting back in countrified twang of heart-rending openness or pushing the pace, the authenticity of the songs shines through. Coupling endearing transparency and energetic exuberance is quite a combination. This Saturday evening at LAVA Space, Katie Ellen will be joined by the folky power pop of Lily Mastrodimos-led Long Neck, who released their new album Will This Do? today via Tiny Engines. You’ll also find Deli Philly favorite Michael Cantor, a.k.a. The Goodbye Party, and the emotive-punk duo of Who Love You will be getting the night started. – Michael Colavita

New Track: "Houses Into Homes" - Katie Ellen

After the breakup of rising band Chumped and a deeply involved romantic relationship, frontwoman Anika Pyle found herself in Philly, taking collage classes, writing new music, and starting a new recording project with former Chumped bandmate/drummer Dan Frelly that they eventually named Katie Ellen. The duo began working with Kyle Pulley at The Headroom Philadelphia, laying down the foundation for what would be the band's forthcoming debut full-length album Cowgirl Blues. The LP is due out this Friday, July 14 via Lauren Records, and you can join Katie Ellen that very same evening to welcome its arrival at PhilaMOCA with Field Mouse and Roger Harvey. You can also now check out the LP's latest single, "Houses Into Homes," and a Q&A with Pyle and Frelly at Stereogum.
