Show Recap: Unannounced War on Drugs Performance w/Kurt Vile at JB’s

This past Friday, as the evening approached and the week’s end commenced, a buzz surrounded Johnny Brenda’s unannounced show, which hung in the balance as a wildcard. And as time moved forward, word came out that the unnamed act would be The War on Drugs, and there was much rejoicing.
The crowd filed into the friendly confines on the corner of Frankford and Girard with an atmosphere of excitement, and they were not disappointed. With a set heavily weighted upon songs from their latest album Lost in a Dream, including the set opener “Burning,” they sweetened the surprise treat even more with former War on Drugs member Kurt Vile lending his axe wizardry throughout the set, elevating celestial songs like “Arms Like Boulders” and “Eyes to the Wind.” Clicking on all cylinders, the audience was naturally caught up in their hazily powerful set, initially and appropriately concluding with “Lost in a Dream.”
This memorable blur of a night was capped off by an encore, where Vile reemerged joining the Granduciel-led crew on the apropos “Brothers,” accenting why Philly is such a great music town. (Photo by Nikki Volpicelli) - Michael Colavita

Kurt Vile Mural by Steve Powers Vandalized

Our Twitter timeline blew up yesterday when local artist Najeeb Sheikh (Instagram user @dasheikee) came across "an ignorant piece of shit" painting over the commissioned mural for Kurt Vile's Wakin on a Pretty Daze album cover by world-renowned street artist Steve "ESPO" Powers. As reported by street art blogger Conrad Benner (who goes by the Twitter and Instagram handles @streetsdepts), "According to @dasheikee, the man said he was not connected to the city or the building's owner and that he was buffing the mural because it was attracting graffiti to the neighborhood." This is outrageous! What narrow-minded asshole has the nerve and audacity to illegally do such a thing? You can check out photos of the culprit at work above and below by Sheikh. Please help track down this jerkoff, and send plenty of bad karma his way.

Update: Philly.com's Leah Kauffman scored an interview with the culprit, DJ Lee Mayjahs, who talked about being mentally "not well" and his remorse for his actions. He has also offered to pay Powers for his time to repaint the mural. You can read the rest of what Mayjahs had to say HERE.

Make The World Better Benefit w/Kurt Vile, The Districts & More at Union Transfer June 20

Connor Barwin’s Make The World Better Foundation, R5 Productions, and WXPN host a special fundraiser for the revitalization of Ralph Brooks Park in South Philly tonight. The big project will feature a state of the art basketball court, an urban farm, and a mural made by renowned artist, Steve “ESPO” Powers. The show features a stellar lineup that includes a headlining set from “constant hitmaker” Kurt Vile & his Violators. Vile will be joined by our most recent Philly Best Emerging Artist of the Year Poll Winners, The Districts, who have had a breakout year with their Fat Possum release and hefty touring schedule, which includes stints with Dr. Dog and White Denim. Rounding out the lineup will be Houston’s The Tontons. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 9pm, $25 - $300, All Ages - Bill McThrill

New Track: "Jamaican Plain" - Sore Eros & Kurt Vile

Below is the patient, instrumental title track from Sore Eros & Kurt Vile's forthcoming EP Jamaican Plain, named after a section in Boston, MA where it was recorded and Vile once resided. It will be available on vinyl and digitally on November 5 via Care In The Community Recordings.

Weekend Warrior, October 25 - 27

Local favorite son Kurt Vile is taking the stage this Saturday at Union Transfer. Equal parts psychedelic, offbeat and profound, Vile has quickly established himself as a music industry darling. Fresh off another critically acclaimed album, his own local holiday, and being paraded through the streets of our city, he’ll be backed by his aptly named Violators. Expect smoky, hypnotic music occasionally interspersed with some of Kurt’s trademark (pleasantly) awkward banter. They’ll be joined by tour mates melodic Brooklyn up-and-comers Beach Fossils and NYC three-piece VBA, with current Violator member Bentley Anderson. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 9pm, $22, All Ages - Daniel Ludwig
