Mike Bell & the Movies

Weekend Warrior, May 16 - 18

It’s fuckin’ pourin’ out! But you should definitely still join the rest of the denim-clad longhairs ready to rock tonight at Golden Tea House. Purling Hiss will be going back to their DIY roots headlining the West Philly house show this evening. You’ll also find Mike Bell & The Movies celebrating the release of their latest album. (Wait . Isn’t this like their third record release celebration for the same album - the second of this year!?! I guess that they’re getting some serious mileage out of it.) Perry Shall’s metal outfit Hound (who also just dropped its new LP Out of Time today) and twee-tinged rock gals Marge will be holding things down as well. Get wet - it will be worth it! Golden Tea House, (Please contact guildshows@gmail.com for more info.), 8pm, $5 - $7, All Ages - Alexis V.

"Nothing Works" for Mike Bell & The Movies at The Boot & Saddle Dec. 10

Mike Bell & the Movies are currently on tour with Amherst's Pachangacha in support of their latest LP Nothing Works. As a songwriter, Bell wears his heart on his sleeve; however, his tunes don't come off like just another sadsack singer-songwriter but rather a self-deprecating protagonist who can find humor in his flawed life. Backed by his band The Movies, who consists of ex-members from Algernon Cadwallader, Dangerous Ponies and Bandname, the power-pop quartet simply want you to sing-along and have a good time at their expense. They'll also be joined this evening at the Boot & Saddle by Philly indie rockers Kite Party and lo-fi, bedroom indie popsters Manors. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $7, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman

Mike Bell & the Movies Opening for Parquet Courts at KFN Jan. 10

Mike Bell & the Movies will be bringing their brand of introverted indie pop to the cozy stage of Kung Fu Necktie tonight. While Bell’s 2011 self-deprecatingly titled album The World’s Unremarkable Man is rather upbeat, his latest release Concepts/Themes plays out a bit somber, but the introspective nature of his songwriting still remains. He’ll be opening for buzzing rockers Parquet Courts who are currently on their first U.S. Tour, and will also be joined by local all-female trio Amanda X, Priests and The Cats. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $5, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman
