The Deli Philly’s Choice/Cuts: Norwegian Arms - “Tired of Being Cold”

Hola! We’re back with another episode of Choice/Cuts. This time around Keith Birthday and Dr. Awkward, a.k.a. Norwegian Arms, a.k.a. Fulbright scholar/ESL Folk founder Brendan Mulvihill and Dr. Dog’s Eric Slick were nice enough to come by and chat, crack a plenty of jokes, and play us some tunes. Check out a sweet sounding version of “Tired of Being Cold” off their upcoming album Wolf Like a Stray Dog. As always, special thanks to the awesome crew at HotBox Studios! We love working with them, and you will too so drop them a line for your audio/video recording needs. Enjoy!

R5 Free Summer Concert Series w/Norwegian Arms & Jukebox the Ghost at Morgan’s Pier Aug. 4

Hopefully these crazy spurts of rain will cease, but we do need a bit of a cool down. According Morgan Pier’s tweets, it’s always five degrees cooler at their venue. Good market ploy, the truth or both? Well, what is some damn good marketing is the free R5 summer concert series on Saturdays. This week, we have weirdo-folk (and sometimes comedy) duo Norwegian Arms, a.k.a. Keith Birthday and Dr. Awkward, a.k.a. Brendan Mulvihill and Eric Slick, who are building quite the reputation of delivering impassioned performances with their minimalistic setup. (We’ll also be sharing more interesting stuff from them very soon.) They’ll be opening for pals and former Philly natives Jukebox the Ghost, who provide plenty of natural energy boosts when they take the stage. So if the Mad Decent Block Party isn’t your thing, you’ve got another great, free option today. Cheers! Morgan’s Pier, 221 N. Columbus Blvd., 6pm, Free, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman

Norwegian Arms Come Into Focus at JB’s June 30

When Brendan Mulvihill a.k.a. Keith Birthday and current Dr. Dog drummer Eric Slick a.k.a. Dr. Awkward combine forces, the resulting music is self-characterized weirdo-folk called Norwegian Arms. However, the tandem’s minimalist approach is far from lacking depth. Ironically, as Mulvihill sings, “I’m so tired of being cold,” a song inspired by his time in Siberia, his enthusiastic mandolin playing provides an upbeat warming atmosphere. For his part, Slick’s pots and pans style percussion are the groundwork for the ever-energetic mandolin to move freely about, setting the tempo and pushing the pace when the song calls for it, but also laying back and allowing Mulvihill’s passionate vocals shine through. From a distance, it appears simple, but catch them at an arm’s length at Johnny Brenda’s tonight, and the real picture will come into focus. Also don’t forget to welcome Mulvihill back from his recent trip to Chile with ESL Folk, a project that he started with his comrades to help students in other countries learn English by way of folk music.
