On the Water Record Release Celebration at PhilaMOCA May 23

Celebrating the release of its new full-length album Cordelia (which will be available for purchase on vinyl this evening) is the oddball-folk troupe of On the Water, who will be headlining PhilaMOCA tonight! The Fletcher VanVliet-led group’s latest is something you’ll readily absorb with its fine-detailed, fresh open-air instrumentation and rumbling vocals. These songs find a sweet spot, stretching out in intriguing expanses, while still keeping close contact on a personal level. On the Water will be joined by the jazz-folk of Liz & the Lost Boys, who elegantly breeze through one’s mind with a classic yet contemporary approach. The big-band explorations of Impressionist round out the night of local talent. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $6-$10, All Ages - Michael Colavita

West Philly oddball-folk troupe On the Water surprised us with a new four-song EP entitled Baptism right before the turn of the New Year. It was recorded at Sex Dungeon Studios by James Ryskalchick and Dan Angel, and will be released on cassette in February, but you can stream and download the record for free below. The band also plans to release a full-length album, Cordelia, on vinyl in May.

Circadian Rhythms & On the Water Opening for Saintseneca at JB’s Oct. 15

Circadian Rhythms take you away to a simpler time when families and friends huddled around the lone AM radio in the home to enjoy the purity and beauty of music together. Those magical times can be captured once again at one of the band’s live performances, and you’ll have the opportunity to do so this evening when they open for Columbus, Ohio four-piece Saintseneca, who have a new release coming out soon via Anti Records, at Johnny Brenda’s. Circadian Rhythms just started working on their first album in two years so they’ll most likely have some old-timey new tunes for you. Also joining in on the retro fun are Deli faves and West Philly oddball folkies On the Water. They’ve been touring heavily before and since the release of their LP False Starts so you can expect their performance to be tight in the loosest way possible. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman
