Restorations

Weekend Warrior, April 8 - 10

Restorations will be making a stop home this evening at Johnny Brenda’s. The group’s music has the openness and grand scale suitable for the arena, but maintains its approachable indie roots. Songs open up into uplifting, heroic musical climaxes that are begging to be emphasized by elaborate light shows or columns of sparks, but still share similarities with basement bands like Cap’n Jazz through their use of arpeggiated melodies and expressively dissonant chords. Jon Loudon’s coarse though sonorous smoker voice sounds somewhere between Psychedelic Furs’ Richard Butler and Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, while incorporating the vocal inflections of (forgive me) Bono. Joining Restoration will be tourmates Creepoid, who bring a more dismal approach to the stage with darker textures and a detached, despondent expression. They take the bleakness and grayness from bummergaze bands like Slowdive and pair them with the ferocity and guttural growl of grunge in a similar way to contemporary bands True Widow or Cloakroom. The Dirty Nil will kick off the night with peak energy levels and their nitrous-fueled garage-punk. Imagine Nation Of Ulysses with more yelling and more fuzz. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $15 (Sold Out), 21+ - Bryce Woodcock

Weekend Warrior, October 23 - 25

On back-to-back evenings, Union Transfer plays host to a stacked billing. The melodic anthem-inducing pop punk of The Menzingers is emotively pertinent, instilling a rousing energy that tees up lyrically for those all-in crowd-pleasing moments. The ever-evolving sound of mewithoutYou marinated in lyrical contemplation and an instrumental diversity that runs the gambit from softly subdued to a blistering assertive volcano of post-hardcore. The weaving figure-eight indie rock of Restorations murmurs and explodes, consistently adjusting the dial in a calculated, controlled manner while a burning intensity reaches the universal surface. Maryland post-hardcore outfit Pianos Become The Teeth complete a twin night billing that brings out emotions in the best way possible. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., $20-$24, 7pm, All Ages - Michael Colavita

New Video: Tiny Desk Concert (NPR) - Restorations

Restorations recently performed for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series in Washington, D.C. The set features “Separate Songs,” “Tiny Prayers,” and “ The Future” from their latest album LP3. The pared-down sound adds to the air of intimacy, allowing the cutting personal nature of the lyrics/vocals to shine through.
