Seagulls

Weekend Warrior, January 11 - 13

Seagulls first capture our attention with the graceful melodies and textured soundscapes found on the group’s debut Great Pines, The Deli Philly’s September Record of the Month 2014. The LP was later picked up by Yellow K Records and re-issued. Today, it’s long-awaited follow-up is out now via Evergreen Prefecture/Honest Face Records (and is available on a thumb drive, packaged like Sega Genesis cartridge). “Thrown Voice is an album about communication - interpersonally, with the environment, within one’s self - and the way that technology can facilitate or get in the way of those interactions. It’s a follow-up about the importance of following up.” Once again, Matt Whittle and friends demonstrate their musical talents, masterfully crafting a timeless sound for the modern age. Feel free to come and experience plenty of feels tomorrow night at PhilaMOCA, where Seagulls will be holding their album release show, supported by friends Spirit Haus, Queue, and URBVN. – H.M. Kauffman

New Lyric Video: "Like U Do" - Seagulls

Thrown Voice, the forthcoming record from Seagulls, is slated for release on January 11 via Evergreen Prefecture & Honest Face Records. The band recently shared a lyric video by Noah J Landers for its lead single, “Like U Do”. Soaked in soothing harmonies, the song has a pacifying tone that gradually ventures in a more aggressive, surf-pop space. "Thrown Voice is an album about communication - interpersonally, with the environment, within one’s self - and the way that technology can facilitate or get in the way of those interactions." The video craftily taps into nostalgic memories, displaying the lyrics through Windows 98, AOL Instant Messenger, etc.

New Track: "Missing Parts" (Jeff Pianki Cover) - Seagulls

Seagulls recently issued a compilation of acoustic cuts and covers, Answering Machine: Acoustic and Undercover. You'll find a cover of Jeff Pianki's “Missing Parts” kicking off the collection. The warmth of vocal harmony slices through the reflective heartache/loneliness in the residual evening illumination.

Seagulls Radiates a Natural Warmth at Bourbon & Branch Jan. 30

With their debut LP, Great Pine, ready for re-release on vinyl this Tuesday via Yellow K Records, Seagulls are set to take the stage tonight at Bourbon & Branch. The former Featured Artist (s) Poll Winners quickly grabbed our attention last year with their debut LP, and became last September’s Record of the Month. It's the type of album that you gradually absorb with its open-air vibe and delicate, lifting harmonies and instrumentation that remain vibrantly layered, somehow toeing the line between nostalgic and fresh with its 8-bit flourishes. The music radiates a natural warmth, allowing listeners to ease into the weekend. (BTW: Attendees will receive a free CD while supplies last.) Baltimore brotherly duo and fellow Yellow K labelmates, New God, bring a blend rich harmonies with an experimental side. New York’s Jagged Leaves unleash a high-energy variety of folk with an electronic bite, and Brooklynites Laura & Greg open the festivities with a tight, twinkling traditional take on folk. Bourbon & Branch 705 N. 2nd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ - Michael Colavita

New Music Video: "You and Me" - Seagulls

You kind of have to love a band willing to take physical abuse for the sake of art. Above is a picture of the aftermath from Seagulls' new music video (directed by Doug Zajaczkowski) for the wonderful track "You and Me," off their debut LP Great Pine. The album is getting re-released on February 3 via Yellow K Records, and you can catch Seagulls live at the label's showcase on January 30 at Bourbon & Branch.
