Sheer Mag

A Benefit For A Friend In Need w/Sheer Mag at PhilaMOCA Nov. 14

The Deli Philly 2014 Best Emerging Artist Poll Winner, Sheer Mag recently announced that they'll be combining their first three seven-inches into one LP, entitled Compilation. They have also remastered the EPs I & II for the collection. Tonight is the hard-rockin', riff-lovin' quintet's last scheduled show in Philly before heading out on their tour of Australia and New Zealand so you want to make it out to PhilaMOCA this evening where they'll be holding A Benefit For A Friend In Need. Sheer Mag will be joined at this charitable R5-presented event by Philly punks Wild at Heart, whom we are expecting some good things from in the near future, and gutter-pop trio Metalleg. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $12, All Ages - Alexis V.

Cross Over Into an Alternative Universe w/Vanillalord at Everybody Hits May 25

Vanillalord have something to celebrate this evening at Everybody Hits with the release of their new record Macro Plaque PAC. It's their first via Boiled Records, and the band crosses over into an alternative universe, as keys, bass, and percussion dictates a playfully intense, search-party sound. Commanding baritone vocals reign from the front as tightly spun post-punk wheels drive ahead, cruising with purpose. That focus captures glances of newly exposed alien lifeforms that inhabit the area, while danger potentially lies around any corner; discovery is at the controls. Tonight, the firing-on-all-cylinders sound of Sheer Mag, whose infectious, garage-hardened grit merges slick guitar licks, a relentless backend thrust, and vocals that tear right through the center, will be joining them. Meanwhile, Mike Polizze (of Purling Hiss) will lock you into a fuzzed-out, psych-pop spectrum, punctuated by flexing guitar muscle. With a smacking immediacy, Memphis punks Ex-Cult complete this lineup. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $10, All Ages - Michael Colavita

A Fundraiser for the Philadelphia Student Union w/Sheer Mag, Bad Canoes & More at PhilaMOCA May 6

Will McAndrew (of R5 Productions) is curating a fundraiser show at PhilaMOCA to support the Philadelphia Student Union in its mission of banding students together to "demand a high quality education in the Philadelphia public school system." It's a tried and true method; there’s no better way to empower young people and bolster a youth movement than through the magical power of rock 'n' roll music. Guitarmony shred-rock titans Sheer Mag will be headlining the event, busting out riffs that they would never teach you in school. Dark Thoughts will also be performing in support of the students with their angsty, accelerated Ramones swagger, building heavy parallels in sound and objective to Rock 'n' Roll High School. Hopefully all buildings will be left intact. Bad Canoes, which features the unparalleled vocal stylings of Marissa Paternoster from Screaming Females, are also pitching in by bringing their outlandish, no-wave meets Slits-inspired rock 'n' roll to the stage. With songs that range in subject from bangin’ radio stations to meeting babes at the mall, each tune is delivered with a raw ferocity and jarring rejection of musical standards. On this lineup, they’re like that one disruptive kid in class who can always get the whole room going: disorderly and chaotic, but a welcome departure from the status quo. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $12, All Ages. - Bryce Woodcock

New Track: "Can't Stop Fighting" - Sheer Mag

Sheer Mag have a new single, which they recently shared, entitled "Can't Stop Fighting." The song tackles the subject of violence and degredation directed towards women, and calls out those who idly standby, allowing it to happen. It's a battle cry that draws the line, waging war against a growing concern happening throughout the world.
