Announcing The Deli Philly's 9th Anniversary Bash at PhilaMOCA w/The Retinas, Them Jones & So Totally!

Dear Deli Readers,

Yes, it’s about that time of year again! We will be returning to our home away from home, PhilaMOCA, on Saturday, October 14th for The Deli Philly’s 9th Anniversary Bash, and we are psyched to announce this year’s lineup. You may remember our headliners for the evening. (Or maybe it’s about time you get to know them.) The Retinas threw down with us last year, alongside LOUDS and Suburban Living (who are currently on tour with Frankie Rose – hope that you are having a blast, fellas!), and were recently voted The Deli Philly Best Emerging Indie Rock Artist, so we are thrilled to see them graduate to this year’s headlining slot. They’ll be joined by two rad newcomers to the event, who have both received Record of the Month honors from us. “Reviving and reinventing soundscapes reminiscent of the Age of Aquarius” (September 2016), Them Jones are one of the talented emerging torchbearers of Philly’s ever-evolving psych-rock/pop community, and providing us with “the ideal soundtrack for winter sadness” (January 2017), So Totally will surely melt our hearts. It will certainly be a night of music not to be missed!

We are also happy to be donating all proceeds from our annual celebration to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a nonprofit organization “dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society.” Whether you realize it or not, our staff (past & present) is made up of many proud immigrants and members of the LGBTQ community, who encourage all of our readers to do what you can to push back against this wave of hate that has risen in our society, emboldened as of late by the dishonorable Troll-in-Chief.

We hope that you’ll be able to join us for a fun evening of good vibes, great music and no hate! For more info, go HERE.

Much love,

Q.D. Tran & The Deli Staff

The Deli Philly’s January Record of the Month: a cheap close-up of heaven - So Totally

Philly four-piece So Totally gives listeners the ideal soundtrack for winter sadness with the release of their debut EP. Equal parts moody reverb and poetic gloom, a cheap close-up of heaven is a brutally candid depiction of unfiltered millennial feels.

Opening with the swell of “i can’t wait,” So Totally prove that not all twenty-somethings are afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves. Heightened by lyrical concision and atmospheric riffs, the song is a melodic rumination on uncertainty and intimacy. On “lead & alchemy,” the universal need to be loved takes center stage amidst crashing riffs and lines like “I want to taste the real thing, follow me home” just before the track “rare form” pairs the sincerity of early aughts emo with the unfettered intensity of mid-90s shoegaze.

Infused with well-tempered nostalgia, “rare form” is the perfect summation of both genres’ devotion to doomed love and self-loathing - two themes further explored in “late gloomer”. Brutal like a best friend’s honesty, it is a ready-made wake-up call for anyone prone to self-induced sorrow or prolonged bouts of sulking. Comprised of hissing snare and reminders like “no one cares if it’s raining out, no one cares if you hate yourself,” the song is a bitter pill to swallow, but in a good way, while “easy leave” is a grunge-y hymn about the necessity of escapism, despite its limitations, and the frustration of temporary lows. a cheap close-up of heaven ends with the somber burn of “zoetrope,” a bleak but breathtaking portrait of human closeness eclipsed by apathy, a befitting end to an EP that isn’t afraid to find light at the center of an existential abyss.

The tracks on So Totally’s debut are ready-made mantras for the New Year, a collection of anthems for realists and romantics alike. With a combination of nostalgia and sincerity, a cheap close-up of heaven might not help you live your best life, but it will make you feel less alone, giving even the staunchest pessimist a glimmer of hope. Debut So Totally Album Available for Streaming & Download

So Totally instantly won our hearts over with their debut single, "Zoetrope". And after taking a listen to their first album, a cheap close-up of heaven, we can't help but get excited about what the future holds for this fledgling shoegaze/indie-rock quartet. The band requested us to "play it loud and enjoy." Gladly!

So Totally (In Love) at KFN March 10

So Totally, the newest hazy nu-gaze band to emerge in the Philly scene, will be headlining a Guild show at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Their single, "Zoetrope," incorporates the surreal lassitude that typifies bedroom dream pop with the dark tenor of moody 90's shoegaze and the sonic dynamics of grunge. The guitar lines are somber and delicate with occasional gentle pitch dives at the end of a line as the melody falls away. Supporting So Totally will be Soft Fangs, whose sound oscillates from driving, full-bodied shoegaze to gently strummed, minimalist bedroom folk ditties. What remains consistent is songwriter John Lutkevich’s light, whispery voice and distinctly unhurried, lolling attitude of the songs. Brandon Can’t Dance, the side project turned main for Brandon Ayres, will be appearing with his arsenal of guitar-and-drum-machine-loop-inspired dark electro pop tunes. Also joining the lineup is Aphra, whose sweet, instrumentally minimalist but melodically intricate compositions will hit your ears like lullabies for yearning, jaded adults. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $6, 21+ - Bryce Woodcock
