The Spirit of the Beehive

Lame-O Records "Rock Residency" Feat. Lithuania, The Spirit of the Beehive & Slaughter Beach, Dog at Boot & Saddle Jan. 7

Tonight is the kickoff to this month's Lame-O Records's "Rock Residency" at Boot & Saddle. It's a stacked lineup where you'll find "hardcore friends" Eric Slick (Dr. Dog) and Dominic Angelella (DRGN KING), a.k.a. Lithuania, headlining the local indie label's showcase. The group's LP was The Deli Philly's September Record of the Month last year, and the duo also recruited drummer Ricardo Lagomasino (Many Arms, DRGN KING) to help fill out its grunge-meets-pop-rock sound. They'll be joined by The Spirit of the Beehive, which includes members of Glocca Morra and Kite Party. The shoegaze/grunge outfit has plans to release a new album later this year via Jade Tree. Popping the residency's cherry will be Slaughter Beach, Dog, the solo project from Modern Baseball's Jake Ewald. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $8, 21+ - Alexis V.

Where the Locals Are Going in Philly This NYE

Nice job, Philly! What looked a little scarce with local representation for New Year’s Eve has filled out into a variety of sweet shows that will have folks spread out all over Philly. Kat Kat Phest, in its fourth and final year, will be auld lang syning away at Everybody Hits with Creepoid and The Spirit of the Beehive, two bands that definitely deserve more of that national/international love and attention in 2016. A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Captured Track’s EZTV, and Mercury Girls have the indie-pop goodness on lockdown over at Johnny Brenda’s. The dancin’ fools can be found with the Making Time crew at Union Transfer, West Philadelphia Orchestra, Johnny Showcase & The Mystics, and Ill Doots at Underground Arts, and LOUDS and Cheerleader, at Ortlieb’s this year. Unfortunately, Nothing at Boot & Saddle is sold out, as you should’ve known that it would, but I’m a firm believer that you can get into any show that you really want to. You just need to get crafty. Maybe unlawful sometimes, but it’s all in the name of the rock gods. Hope to see you out and about this NYE! - Q.D. Tran

The Spirit of the Beehive Opening for The Hotelier at FUC Nov. 5

Philly's own The Spirit of the Beehive effortlessly go from comforting, shadowy shoegaze to aggressive, grimy grunge, making them one of our favorite up-and-coming bands lately. This uncanny ability has also recently caught the attention of Jade Tree Records. The well-respected Delaware indie label has signed our young upstarts, and will be releasing their next full-length album in 2016, which we are very excited to hear. The local quintet is on a stacked R5 bill this evening at the First Unitarian Church where they'll be opening for buzzing Massachusetts punks The Hotelier, Cleveland emo rockers Runaway Brother, and Long Beach, NY pop punks Oso Oso, whom they are currently on tour with. Come out & get sweaty in the Church's basement tonight! First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7:30pm, $12, All Ages - Alexis V.

New Video: "You Are Arrived (But You've Been Cheated)" - The Spirit of the Beehive & Sign to Jade Tree

The Spirit of the Beehive have a new highly erotic/psychedelic video for the title track of their latest EP You Are Arrived (But You've Been Cheated) (Ranch/Ice Age), which was produced by Federico Casanova. We think that we know where they got the orgasmic masturbatory idea from, but we'd like to keep the depths of our porn-site knowledge to ourselves. Great news though - The Spirit of the Beehive just signed to Jade Tree so look out for a new full-length album in 2016!
