New Track: "Calling Out" - Sports

Ohio transplants Sports are a much-welcomed addition to the local music landscape of Philly. The rambunctious powerpop gets our booty shaking and limbs joyously flailing in all directions, before we collapse, gasping for air. Below is "Calling Out," the band's second contribution to its split 7" with San Francisco's Plush, which is now available via Father/Daughter Records. You can find the gang at Pilam on Wednesday, November 8, where they'll be joined by Boosegumps and Brooklyn's Yucky Dusters and Fits. (Photo by Hunter Prunty)

Weekend Warrior, September 22 - 24

Summertime has come and gone, and fall is upon us. However, those in need of some music therapy can hone in on one place, and make a two-day appointment. This Friday and Saturday, World Café Live hosts the succinctly named Philly Music & Arts Fest. Among the plethora of local artists canvassing both levels, the spellbinding free-floating melodies of Kississippi, the experimental existential-searching of Eric Slick, the serenading surges of Abi Reimold, the cruising, cosmic psych-pop of Ceramic Animal, and the infectious, rumbling emotives of Cayetana. The quintet of Tiny Hueman kicks off the affair on Saturday afternoon with the endearing open-book of Dominic continuing down the line. Familiarity meets futuristic in the groove-spiraling, psych folk of Pine Barons. Exploring personal depths with a robust energetic push, Sports instantly adheres. And the episodic, comforting narratives of Slaughter Beach, Dog and the candidly soulful hip-hop, hybrid observations of Ivy Sole serves as a snapshot of a lineup that offers a solid sampling of the litany of artistic excellence within our city. – Michael Colavita

Well, the quartet just announced that it will be releasing a new 7" split with San Francisco's Plush. Check out its lead single, "Making It Right," which premiered this morning over at NPR! And keep a lookout for the its arrival on October 20 via Father/Daughter Records.

Weekend Warrior, February 24 - 26

The weather’s unseasonably warm temperatures may push one out the door in search of good musical times. Luckily the docket is full of excellent opportunities. Among the plethora of performances on the slate, First Unitarian Church plays host to a pair. Proceeds from tonight’s Indie Pop Prom will go the Pink Fund. As for the billing, the incisive, empowering songwriting of Sad13, a.k.a. Sadie Dupuis (of Speedy Ortiz), keeps things real, delivering in a contagious, free-flowing, instrumental platform. Similarly, Sports navigate personal depths through an avalanche of momentous pop rock. The blooming, experimental jangle of Mercury Girls and the nostalgic, melodic pop-punk of Swanning shape a stellar evening, which also includes headliners, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Meanwhile, Saturday’s 10th annual Two Piece Fest will be offering an all-day affair, exploring the full spectrum of dynamics among duos. You can view the full list of performers for the festival HERE.

Creeping into one’s foggy, THC-filled mind, the cosmic conquests of folk-psych outfit Shadow Band celebrate their freshly landed album, Wilderness Of Love (Mexican Summer), with a release show this Saturday at Baird Mansion Atrium. Likewise, the trio of No Thank You sets sail with their new album, Jump Ship (Lame-O Records), with a show tonight at Everybody Hits. The album exhibits an impassioned, emotive exploration with a cathartic air that makes one stay onboard. - Michael Colavita

New Music Video: "Reality TV" - Sports

Ohio transplants Sports are reissuing their second album, All Of Something, on cassette via Father/Daughter Records. Below is the new music video for their single, "Reality TV," which was directed and edited by Nick Nazmi. You'll find the group sadly but fondly watching friends partying around them and giving the gang love on their own SportsTV channel. Its ending feels rather bittersweet, but Sports have some more good news for their friends and fans with the release of their debut, Sunchokes, on tape, as well as digital streaming services like Spotify and iTunes.
