Stinking Lizaveta

Weekend Warrior, April 14 - 16

Stinking Lizaveta commemorate their latest record, Journey to the Underworld (Translation Loss Records, with a release show this evening at Johnny Brenda’s. The well-oiled, musical machine of a trio reigns down on listeners with an adventurous heavy exactness. Under the shield of an ominous darkness, the band traverses the unknown obstacles that lie in its path. With a cold, calculated, white-hot laser tenacity, Stinking Lizaveta forge a route, trudging on the pace of the underlying heart-pumping instrumentation that is always ready to detonate. Sheena & Thee Nosebleeds and The Company Corvette will reinforce this hard-rocking, psych-tinged sonic stew.

Also, this Saturday evening, The Foundry hosts The MINKA Carnival. Insatiable, loose, funky grooves permeate from MINKA, it’s the type that dictates/demands one to slip subconsciously into the get down. Meanwhile, having recently uncorked their new EP New Age Psychedelic Experiment, The Mysteries implore a casual psych-pop framework, while the multi-genre-melding, seamless stream of beats from Attic Tapes, formerly known as Fishtown Beats, sets the night into motion. - Michael Colavita

New Stinking Lizaveta Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

It's been nearly half a decade since we've had a new album from Philly's stoner metal power trio Stinking Lizaveta. For the group's follow-up to 2012's The Seventh Direction, the band traveled to the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana to record Journey to the Underworld at "Nosferatus' Lair" Studio. Guitarist Yanni Papadopoulos shared with the UK blog, The Sludgelord, "We wanted to record in New Orleans because of the demonic musical energy one feels down there... At the bottom of the Mississippi you get an underworld feel, like the spirits are all alive and ready to commune with you. Maybe it's Voodoo, or just the deep musical culture." You can stream and purchase Journey to the Underworld, which is available via Translation Loss Records, below.

Red Devil Reunion Show at Beaumont Warehouse Nov. 29

As the weekend sputters to a conclusion, the weeklong reality looms. But, there’s still time for some quality communion. This one at West Philly's Beaumont Warehouse reunites progressive punk compatriots Red Devil and pairs them with the raucous, deeply-embedded prog-metal jams of Stinking Lizaveta, hypnotically hovering in a heavy space. The Invasive Species, who dropped a self-titled record earlier this fall, deliver an unfiltered, expressive punk that ruminates gradually seeping into your system, while the adrenalized aggression of Corrupt Justin aid in the throwback to the present scenario delivering a blistering stomp. Get there early - it’s a matinee. Beaumont Warehouse, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 4:30pm, $5, All Ages - Michael Colavita

Stinking Lizaveta Keeping Philly Weird at KFN June 29

Cult favorites Stinking Lizaveta will be taking on late night duties tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. The power trio recorded their 1996 debut album …Hopelessness and Shame with legendary producer Steve Albini, and they’ve spent nearly two decades inspiring the local music community with their unrelentingly passionate live shows and technical prowess. Combining stoner-sludge metal with boogie-jazz, the band has been a beloved staple in keeping Philly weird. They’ll be joined this evening by socially conscious, hard-rockin’ feminist duo Trophy Wife, whose drummer Katy Otto recently posted, “From now on, when someone asks me why I moved to Philadelphia I am going to say Stinking Lizaveta.” Expect plenty of good vibes and bludgeoning beats! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 Front St., 11pm, $10, 21+ - Alexis V.

Stinking Lizaveta w/Witch Mountain & Castle at JB’s Nov. 3

Like the smell on Sansom in August or the tourists rushing past the Art Museum to stand next to the Rocky statue, some things can only come from Philly. Stinking Lizaveta, one of our city's finest - and weirdest - fusion trios is one of them. With their exuberant stoner sludge boogie-jazz, built on towering riffs and drum crescendos, they've been a cult favorite since the mid-90s, due in no small part to their legendary shows. Tonight at Johnny Brenda's is the perfect location to get consumed by their out-of-control stage presence. They’ll also be accompanied by Witch Mountain and Castle - both doom metal icons in their own right. Johnny Brenda's, 1201 Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ - Alyssa Greenberg
