Have a Prom Redo with the High School Records Prom (and After Prom)

Modern Portland adults likely didn't have the best prom experience in school. Not because everyone definitavely has a shitty time, but because back in our day those that excelled in high school tended to be the jocks, Associated Student Body ruling or prep types that found those types of events the literal social events of the year. Us musically endowed types have a second chance at making prom an actually enjoyable experience thanks to High School Records and their first annual prom they're hosting tonight.

Come donned in your finest of pieces to twerk, cha cha and slow dance with everyone during performances from Hollow Sidewalks, Sweeping Exits, Volturz and You Said Strange. DJ Joseph Hopper will be spinning in between sets, and all money collected at the door is going directly to Outside In.

If a Saturday night prom sesh isn't in your cards, consider heading to the High School Records After Prom, which takes place tomorrow. Devy Metal, Helens, The American Weather and Small Field will be playing the Liquor Store for free in efforts to close out High School Records' first foray into social engagements.

Tickets for tonight's prom are still for sale, running on an suggested donation of about $10.

We're not going down, Not Without a Fight II

As the first 100 days of our terrible president's time in office comes to a close, our country's woke citizens are still trying to figure out coping mechanisms for the awe that will undoubtedly overwhelm us for the years to come. Trump has already destroyed much of the progress our country has made in so many ways and if there's one thing us here in the Pacific Northwest can do about it, it's put on a damn good show in support of the programs he's trying to nix.

Tonight begins the second round of Not Without A Fight, one of our city's music-based options at dealing with the decisions of this administration thus far. On tonight's bill, different factions of punk meet, with a bit of glam coming from Sweeping Exits, some indie/alternative from Beach Party and hints of melody from Mala Fides, rounded out by a bit of grunge-gaze from Seattle's Bod

Proceeds from this year's Not Without A Fight are being donated to local health and social services nonprofit Outside In, as well as drug safety and harm reduction volunteer organization Portland People's Outreach Project (PPOP). Tickets for nights one and two are only $7.

Laura Palmer's DEATH PARADE's Residency is in Full Effect

In conjunction with this weekend's Sabertooth Music Fest, Showdeer and Al's Den are hosting Laura Palmer's DEATH PARADE as their residency for the next six days. Though it technically started last night, many special guests will be joining in on the dark psych folk fun, led by the beautiful swoon of Laura Hopkins.

Jetlag from their recent UK tour won't stop this trio from giving it all they've got for the rest of the week, with local favorites like Nathan Baumgartner of And And And, Dim Wit, Sweeping Exits, Cat Hoch, and Bryson Cone aiding in the excitement.

See the flyer above for a breakdown of each night's LPDP pairings. Each night is free, 21+ and starts at 7pm so if you're gearing up to head out for the night, stop by Al's Den and see them tonight with Haley Heynderickx.

Alien Boy's EP Release Party Benefits Nonprofit

Alien Boy was marked a loud favorite of ours with last year's debut Never Getting Over It, and a roaring cover of "Hand In Glove" by the Smiths that came along with it. The album showed Alien Boy as a rambunctious callback to late 90's emo laced pop punk and with the release of their newest EP Stay Alive, we find ourselves still enjoying their clamor, with a more settled down maturity.

Though Stay Alive was digitially released in early October, its coinciding show celebrating the physical 7" takes place this Thursday at Blackwater. Beloved Deli Portland picks Little Star will be joining Alien Boy, along with horror glam punks Sweeping Exits and some hardcore from Naux.

All proceeds from money collected at the door of this all-ages show will go to Planned Parenthood and for just a $5 cover, it'd be kind of silly not to come support.

Stay Alive is available on vinyl via Good Cheer Records and on cassette tape through Olympia's Reflective Tapes.
