Two Piece Fest

Weekend Warrior, February 24 - 26

The weather’s unseasonably warm temperatures may push one out the door in search of good musical times. Luckily the docket is full of excellent opportunities. Among the plethora of performances on the slate, First Unitarian Church plays host to a pair. Proceeds from tonight’s Indie Pop Prom will go the Pink Fund. As for the billing, the incisive, empowering songwriting of Sad13, a.k.a. Sadie Dupuis (of Speedy Ortiz), keeps things real, delivering in a contagious, free-flowing, instrumental platform. Similarly, Sports navigate personal depths through an avalanche of momentous pop rock. The blooming, experimental jangle of Mercury Girls and the nostalgic, melodic pop-punk of Swanning shape a stellar evening, which also includes headliners, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Meanwhile, Saturday’s 10th annual Two Piece Fest will be offering an all-day affair, exploring the full spectrum of dynamics among duos. You can view the full list of performers for the festival HERE.

Creeping into one’s foggy, THC-filled mind, the cosmic conquests of folk-psych outfit Shadow Band celebrate their freshly landed album, Wilderness Of Love (Mexican Summer), with a release show this Saturday at Baird Mansion Atrium. Likewise, the trio of No Thank You sets sail with their new album, Jump Ship (Lame-O Records), with a show tonight at Everybody Hits. The album exhibits an impassioned, emotive exploration with a cathartic air that makes one stay onboard. - Michael Colavita

New Two Piece Fest Compilation Available for Streaming

Twenty-two pairings will perform at the 10th annual Two Piece Fest, being held on Saturday, February 25 at First Unitarian Church. That’s quite an extensive billing, so one might not be familiar with all these duos. However, the good folks of the fest have created a compilation, providing a sampling of each band involved, which you can stream below. Explore the artists one might not be familier with while simultaneously listening to an organized but varied playlist. Give it a spin to get geared up for Two Piece Fest X!

Two Piece Fest at Girard Hall Feb. 14

Valentine's Day is the perfect time for good things to come in twos. And that's why the return of Two Piece Fest in its 8th year with a cast of 19 dynamic duos is so apt. Unfortunately, Pilam had to drop out from hosting last minute so it will be held at Girard Hall. The show may be starting early at 2pm, but arriving with a friend, significant other, or frienemy before Winnebago kicks off the festivities at 3:30pm means that both of you get in for the Duo Doorbuster Deal of $10.

After almost three years of silence, keytar-led robot rock outfit Mose Giganticus will be making a triumphant return. And for frontman Matt Garfield, it will be a reunion with his longtime Hulk Smash cohort and Red Planet Recording founder Joe Smiley. The riot grrrls of Trophy Wife should continue to preview some of the newer tracks that they've been recording while still whipping out tunes from their latest release All the Sides. Heavy Medical will explode your eardrums with their twisted noise-metal, the fuzzed-out experimental tribal trance of I IM EYE MY will surely mesmerize, and +HIRS+ will destroy all with their thrash ‘n’ grind. The lineup will also feature Lagomasino/Fishkin, This Temper, The Lopez, Slingshot Dakota, and plenty more. Girard Hall, (Please go HERE for more info.), 2pm, $10 ($10 for 2 before 3:30pm), All Ages - Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, February 14 - 16

Two Piece Fest 7 crash lands upon Pi Lam this Saturday, and whether they’re math rock or metal, electronic or acoustic, musically sound or quirky and action-packed, this year’s festival will feature an eclectic mix of duos that rock. The fest will showcase plenty of out-of-towners like headliners Shellshag, Empty Vessels, and These Branches, but there will also be plenty of locals representing the Philly music community. Co-headliners +HIRS+ may invoke thrills and chills with their slash-and-destroy grindcore, and Driftwood Soldier will stomp a hole in the stage with mandolin-and-bass-infused gutter folk. Weirdo avant-pop outfit Banned Books will show that they haven’t missed a beat since they went from power trio to dynamic duo, and sludge-pop duo Holy Death may preview tunes from their freshly tracked upcoming EP. The fest will also feature the alt-rock sounds of Rasputin’s Secret Police, the fast-paced experimental math-punk of The Joint Chiefs of Math, another sighting of Omar, and a shit ton more! Pi Lam, 3914 Spruce St., 2PM, $5 (before 2pm) - $10 (after 2pm), All Ages - Bill McThrill
