Chillout with indie rockers Hillary Chillton Saturday at The Smell

Hillary Chillton, or "Hill Chill" as it's affectionately inked, is a band that resides just east of Pomona in the quiet suburbs of Claremont. The five-piece rep the VLHS Warehouse in Pomona that, like DIY venues Bridgetown and The Smell, have never wavered to bring great local talent and ennervate youths to support the music community. As such, there's an opulence of hi-gain twinkle and garage dirt in Hillary Chillton's indie rock sound that balances pop sensibility without sacrificing that DIY aesthetic (their outputs are personally recorded and engineered). They're also really into Weezer and Modest Mouse — just don't harp them to cover "Float On" or "Pork and Beans".

Find them Friday at the stage of San Diego's AwesomeFest 9, or hang back and watch them at The Smell this Saturday with some local cats: the previously featured post-rock angels Young Lovers and garage punk Saiyans Dustin and The Explosions. Listen to "Devil in Tights" from their recent split with Void Boys pop punk from the Bay. - Ryan Mo

Beast Fiend Throws Suicide Prevention Benefit Show at SUB/Mission - 9/28

San Francisco based punk band, Beast Fiend is putting on an event geared towards the Bay Area community. The band has organized a suicide prevention and awareness benefit show that will take place at SUB/Mission this Sunday, September 28th. This all ages show is going to feature a raffle, a speaker from SF Suicide Prevention and a line up of local bands including: Silver Shadows, Bitter Fruit and Void Boys.

We like it when bands take it upon themselves to do things that are for a great cause. Make sure you support bands who do good things for others and the local community at large, and head out to this show on Sunday!

Premiere: Void Boys - Cosmos + Live Show at Bottom of the HIll with Modern Man and Sea Knight - 6/5

The San Francisco based garage – gaze band, Void Boys are at it again. After the release of their 10-inch vinyl, 2-track single, Starfish, the band has promptly allowed The Deli Magazine San Francisco to premiere their new track, Cosmos.

This song is a previously unreleased track that is being put out by a small L.A. based cassette label called Tuesday Tapes. Void Boys' song is on side A, and shares the rest of the cassette's film with the Los Angeles based band, Hillary Chillton.

Cosmos sounds a bit more intentional than the band's previous compositions. It is romantic and soulful and shows a different side of the band, compared to their upbeat, punkier track, Starfish. Lead singer, Shannon Bodrogi's voice is clear, and has a classic ring to it as she effortlessly bellows over the intriguing, fuzzed out wall of sound that this three-piece band is able to conjure and amplify on their recordings. Cosmos is consistent with Void Boys’ signature garage-gaze sound, but this track also embodies a tighter execution that exudes more confidence, instrumentally and vocally. We like it.

We also like that they are headlining a show on Thursday, June 5th at Bottom of the Hill with Modern Man and Sea Knight. This show is going to be a loud, soulful and fuzzed out night of experimental garage rock, and we can’t wait for it to begin. We totally recommend you make your way out to Bottom of the Hill this week, and listen to Void Boy's new track, Cosmos. -je
