Zone out with WL's "Disintegrate"

Beautifully tackling loss and acceptance in a nutshell, WL's newest tune and accompanying visuals have the power to bring on mental calm and necessary contemplation. It's soothing reel of waves pairs perfectly with Misty Mary's ethereal vocals, creating a layers of hazy, intrinsic texture.

"Disintegrate" comes off of WL's sophomore album titled Light Years, due out on the 28th of this month on XRAY Records. The composition of the album is a point of interest, as it was originally intented to be performed live alongside 'Gandahar,' a French surrealist animation by Rene Laloux. WL decided to team up with various local artists in creating their own visual element to Light Years, using stop motion animation, stereoscopic photography and 3D point cloud scanning as some of the mediums and techniques.

A screening of Light Years the film will be at Laurelhurst Theater on October 26th, with their album release show taking place on November 11th at the Spare Room.

Guitarist and keyboardist Michael Yun spoke on "Disintegrate" to the Grey Estates, who premiered the track just last week:

'Disintegrate' is a song about loss. It's a goodbye with no goodbye, it's a possibility that becomes impossible. It's when the weight of the ocean is over you and you give in to it. The video is a simple meditation on the movement of waves. It's a single shot, from a single point with altered time. We filmed hours of footage in both slow motion and time lapse, but this continuous shot just fit the feeling perfectly.

The Ghost Ease Tour Kick Off

The Ghost Ease will be shipping out for a West Coast tour after a kickoff party this Tuesday (3.18) at the industrial northsiders’ favorite venue. Their psych rock tunes will be a perfect fit for the World Famous Kenton Club as their distorted and guitar driven songs echo swimmingly into the garage sound that this music was born into. The Ghost Ease focus on a steady rhythm and noticeable, grungy guitar sections to fill things out while guitar/vocalist Jem Marie’s dreamy vocals bring their songs into folky ballads. Come on out to send them off the proper way. Opening the show is fellow psych-folk rockers, WL. - Colin Hudson

Best of 2013 Poll for Emerging Portland Artists: FINAL RESULTS!

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging Portland Artists was - as usual - a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it of with remarkable flair!

Kudos to nocturnal psych-rockers Genders (pictured) for winning it! Thumbs up to ethereal dream poppers WL and to sugary indie pop maestros Wild Ones.

Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ Portland scene expert (our jury, list at the bottom) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Portland produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

WL at Bunk Bar 6.18

It’s probably been a while since you’ve heard some good space rock. The soft vocals and drawn out guitar chords that have righteously ruled over the West Coast will take over Bunk Bar tonight. WL has formed a sound similar to the ones we were familiar with in the 1990s and progressed the rock into a fuzzy time warp that sounds like a band you’ve never heard before. The dreamy and beautiful vocals pair with crashing drums beats that create a lot of emotion throughout the songs. They are not quick punches in the face, rather long windowless car rides on a hot summer night. You can experience these sounds tonight for the low cost of 3 dollars, show starts at 9. - Colin Hudson
