The Deli Philly's Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Eliza Bird

After listening to Eliza Bird, it isn’t very surprising to learn that the band’s name was inspired by grave stones in an old cemetery. There’s an inherent sadness in the vocals that seems to weigh heavily on the poetically obtuse lyrics, encouraging you to take a deep dive in search of the meaning behind each tale. The band, which consists of Devyn Luzniak, Jake Soojian, Peter Dampman, and Carson Hyde, “want to feel weird with you.” So check out their tunes below and our latest Featured Artist(s) interview HERE.

The Deli: How did you start making music?

Eliza Bird: Many of us were longtime friends, and would jam, and mess around. So naturally, it started taking form into what it is now.

TD: Where did the name Eliza Bird come from?

EB: We were walking through a park, which we frequented throughout our high school years together. We stumbled upon an old cemetery, and were attracted to some graves stones by a force we cannot understand, nor explain (SPOoOKY). The names on which, we combined into our current name (Rebecca Bird, Eliza Essex)…and then we found Carson behind a tree.

TD: What are your biggest musical influences?

EB: Peaer, Horse Jumper of Love, Duster, The Obsessives, Primus, System of a Down, The Mars Volta, TTNG, Circa Survive, Paramore, Great Grandpa.

TD: What artists (local, national and/or international) are you currently listening to?

EB: Peaer, Horse Jumper of Love, Mannequin Pussy, The Most, Puzzle, Modest Mouse.

TD: What's the first concert that you ever attended and first album that you ever bought?

Peter Dampman: The Front Bottoms, Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness – The Smashing Pumpkins.

Jake Soojian: Foghat, Guitar Hero 2 (PS2).

Devyn Luzniak: Selena Gomez, Brand New Eyes – Paramore.

Carson Hyde: Rise Against, The Neighborhoods – Blink 182.

TD: What do you love about Philly?

EB: It’s small, and you really get to know people. There are so many artists, and creators, which means more opportunities for collaboration.

TD: What do you hate about Philly?

EB: It’s small, and you really get to know people…

TD: What are your plans for 2019?

EB: We are planning on recording and releasing an EP, and hopefully just playing more shows around Philly.

TD: What was your most memorable live show?

EB: We got to play with The Obsessives at a small venue in West Philly in April.

TD: What's your favorite thing to get at the deli?

EB: Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese on an Everything Bagel from North Jersey. No Exceptions.

The Obsessives will be performing at PhilaMOCA on Thursday, July 18, with Prince Daddy & The Hyena and Retirement Party.

Ida Mae release new LP 06.10 at Grimey's in-store performance

Though Ida Mae call Nashville home now, they originally hail from the UK, but their rough-and-tumble Americana music wouldn't give you that idea. Like current tour buddies Greta Van Fleet, they have mastered the art of borrowing from artists they admire to craft a sound all their own. Ida Mae -- the duo of Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean -- will release their newest album Chasing Lights on June 7, and they'll celebrate the event on June 10 at an in-store performance at Grimey's. Chasing Lights features the production of Ethan Johns, who has worked with Kings of Leon and Laura Marling; Johns' seat-of-your-pants production style and Ida Mae's energy make Chasing Lights an electric listen.
