If there's a turn of phrase we kind of detest here at The Deli is "taking the scene by storm." It's one of those generic prefab sentences that ring insincere. But then again, sometimes, some bands do that - kind of rare, but it happens, right? And sometimes, on a hot day like today, being lazy is kind of inevitable. So... yes! Brooklyn's Bodega are taking the NYC scene by storm with their blend of post-punk and pop and their super-fun live shows. That, and their somewhat familiar name, are the main reasons why they are on the cover of the new, spring 2018 issue of The Deli!

It's an issue linked to the biggest event for musicians we've ever organized, which will host a Stompbox Exhibit, a Synth Expo and a Vintage Guitar Exchange in a Bushwick art gallery called Absurd Conclave - hope to see you there!

The Folks at The Deli NYC

The debut EP entitled Burns From the Rope from Boston-via-Mystic trio Fish House drips the cool and collected confidence of seasoned vets. It’s evident from the first track, “Young People” (streaming below), that there is a certain chemistry pushing this project forward. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that the three members — Jake Benavidez (guitar, bass, vox), Kyle Torr-Brown (drums, vox), and Adam Jacey (guitar, bass, vox) — have known each other for a little over a decade. These tracks are summery without being overbearing; while undeniably upbeat, there’s definitely nothing forced here. The foot-tapping, head-bobbing, soul-infused indie rock of Fish House is not forcing you to feel anything, but rather giving you a gentle push towards the idea of taking a bad situation and making something beautiful out of it. The most recent EP Familiar Villains by Boston-based alt-rocker Jason Ebbs is a nostalgic reminder of the aggressively emotion-driven lyricism, youthfully optimistic delivery, and polished guitars that made alt-rock great in the mid-oughts. The EP is filled with plenty of clever arrangements and catchy lines—like the chorus of “Brick Wall” (streaming below) which quips “She’s a brick wall / a flash of passion / but there’s nothing on the other side,” which shine a light on a strong new voice in the Boston indie rock scene. - Lilly Milman

The new single, “Heartbreak In A Box” (streaming below), from Boston’s seven-piece group JUICE delivers the dose of sweet, upbeat neo-soul that—at this point—is to be expected from them. The septet met as freshmen at Boston College, and after winning a Battle of the Bands contest in 2014, have been bringing their funk-influenced play on pop to venues all over New England. Their sophomore LP Workin’ On Lovin’ will be released on June 15. They are currently on tour, with upcoming shows in Burlington, VT on June 9, Nantucket on June 12, and Boston on June 15. - Lilly Milman

On April 19th of 1943, Albert Hofman became the first person to take LSD (and also the first to do so while riding a bike.) 65 years later, Boston-based singer-songwriter Anthony Graziano released a song about it. The debut single “Bicycle Day” (streaming below) is a smooth and psychedelic lullaby, with lyrics that fluctuate between entrancing and eerie (“The roads were winding and the buildings seem tall / As if nothing was real at all / Paranoia has me question my health / Am I dying? Did I poison myself? I guess I'll see.”) A debut EP by the artist is still forthcoming, but Graziano is definitely one to watch. - Lilly Milman
